After weeks of rain and lousy diving in Southern California, we caught a break, just in time for the annual Avalon Underwater Clean Up.

On Saturday, the scuba homeless flocked to the island, pushing all of their worldly belongings around the streets of Avalon. The day was gorgeous, with sunshine, no swell and reasonable visibility. Water temps were in the upper 50's. Lots of junk was brought up from the bottom: cans, bottles, cell phones, barbecues, you-name-its, etc. Lots of good stuff was given away at the raffle, and a great time was had by all.

I didn't take any pictures of the junk! This image of the kelp is prettier to look at.

There I was minding my own business, taking pictures, and I feel a tug on my fin. Thinking, it's Scott, I slowly turn around and there's a cute little harbor seal nibbling on my fin! He stayed to play and let me take his picture to share:

Avalon Harbor is now clean and tidy. Isn't it beautiful?

Why don't you plan on coming out and joining us for next year's clean up?

DSAO,
Jim (jlyle)
