Every year, when this surfing meet takes place, it is usually a really good clue that now is not a good time to go diving along the north coast, and only marginal in most spots along Carmel and Monterey as well. The problem for shore diving then is waves, surge, and silty low vis. The problem for boats is seasickness. There are probably one or two coves in Monterey that might be protected, but I have never had any luck in finding a good place anywhere while this surfing meet was going on. Ling Cod Reef in Carmel is almost always protected, although with low vis as well; but you still would need to deal with the boat ride out to there.
Last year, or maybe the year before, I seem to recall that the meet was held on a weekend, and I was also teaching a scheduled basic open water class that day at the ocean, and it turned out to be a very poor day for scuba.
