I share your appreciation for lush tropical foliage although you've certainly approached it more thoroughly and from a much more scientific standpoint that I have. (I just like seeing it and I'm slowing landscaping my yard to appear more tropical).
As much as you like plants, you should be saving every dime and fighting tooth and nail to get SCUBA certified. There are amazing plants underwater here that you would fall in love with. If $ is stopping you, and it would have certainly would have stopped me at your age, you should pursue a local free diving club. Free diving is cheap compared to SCUBA and much of the beautiful stuff is shallow anyway.
