Last April, I swam with and photographed a 40 whale shark in Utila...who was so curious he kept brushing up against me. There are a few of these photos posted at http://www.orf.org/gallery/Utila/Whale_Shark/WSUtila2004.html
Just came back from another trip where we encounted 5 between 20 and 30'. Nothing so scary as a white, though...even the baby at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (only 5') looks intimidating.
