Dick, you are much better off, diving with a BC. If you look at what Chris posted, you can see all the reasons why you need a BC.
The best system out there, right now is a plate and wing (almost no drag and just as stream line as a backpack, but you have the additional safety of a BC). Halcyon sells some good systems and so does some of the other manufactures (I like buying Halcyon because they invented this system and everyone else has copied it). Take a look at Halcyon website and see if it makes sense.
