I went into the program with around 300 dives and PADI Rescue level cert. The LA County program taught me a lot about bouyancy, improving air consumption, dealing with surf, rescue, fitness, lift bags...the list goes on. For the $450 (which includes a dive boat trip and Catalina Express ticket) you'll get over 100 hours of training. This is a bargain for rec divers. Its only possible because all the instructors are volunteers who love to dive.
