The lee side of Catalina is way different than the southwesterly facing beaches of most of Southern California. First, there's little sand on the front side of Catalina as compared to the wide beaches, and the sand that's there is pebbley, not the fine sand you find on the coast. There are no rivers on Catalina to dump silt into the shoreline water, either. Catalina maybe has a population of a few dozen in the winter - whereas the coast has some 13 million people living within storm drain distance of the coast. Catalina is over 25 miles offshore, also. As you head out, you find greenish water for the first couple of miles, then it turns clear blue. that extends all the way to the offshore islands and past.

With the green vegetation and flowere on the island, I'd say it was spring - maybe Feb, Mar or April.
