What do you suggest in a current or in very poor visibility? The key is to hold it so that it slides through during the ups and downs.

What is your issue with a "jon" line? I have a long one that I have used in less than ideal circumstances and I've found it to be very helpful and not at all a problem. In blind ascents I want to know exactly where the boat is.

The ideal is a line from the bottom that isn't attached to a boat but that usually available unless it is a good sturdy kelp plant.
