Several weeks ago we were diving in Irian Jaya. The boat had tucked in a small lagoon between a group of very small islands to get out of the wind. We were finishing a night dive at about 45 ft near a wall at the base of one of the islands. A loud low frequency noise and vibration began, not unlike that of a very large ship when it starts up or passes over. It increased in intensity until we had to wrap out arms around ourselves as our lungs and stomachs were shaking. It lasted for about 20 or so seconds. Upon returning to out live aboard ship, those on board also had felt it as resembling the 'stuttering movement' of a ship while dragging it's anchor. Later on we found out it was a 7.2 quake several hundred miles away. The vibrations we felt were the shifting of the earth's plates transmitted through the water.

A most spooky night dive!
