Actually, Doug, Catalina is being talked about as a potential site for a wreck. One of the goals of the meeting was to invite people with leadership inclinations to get involved because Ships2Reefs realizes it needs regional level coalitions in order to be successful in bringing more scrapped ships not just to San Diego but to California in general. So, to answer your question about where the "dive community leaders are when you need them", they are out there, stepping forward and willing to volunteer their time, write letters, meet with politicians, attend meetings, raise awareness and money, etc. If you are interested, contact the Foundation (619) 523-1903. The Exec. Director can put you in touch with John Daley, who heads up the Committee, or Dick Long.
