I was diving ten miles offshore last weekend and there was a red tide all the way out there. The upper thirty feet had very poor vis. Red tides are pushed along by currents, tides, wind and waves. It's possible to have terrible vis at one spot and better a mile away. I've read dive reports from the weekend that had visibility varying from 2-25 feet.
