it was 1975 at Dive 'n' Surf in Redondo Beach. We swam laps in the pool hugging a tank and breathing from the bubble stream that went into our mouths. It worked really well and prepared me for a life long love of breathing from jacuzzi jets -- and betting friends that I can hold my breath longer than them. OK so I know it is cheating, but a 3 minute "breath hold" and then come up with just a little heavy breathing is very impressive.

The key is that you never put your mouth onthe bottle. It would not be practical from the angle of it all anyway. But you crack the valve and hold your open mouth above the air stream. Like clearing a mask, it fills the mouth and the water drains out the bottom. It is very easy.

It did teach us to play under water. We were more self reliant then, I think. Or maybe I was young and just had no fears. Oh to be 20 again...
