With film you can use higher ISO's for wide angle without a lot of quality loss. Helpful in California shooting conditions. With digital you get more undesirable "noise" at higher ISO settings. If he had used a higher ISO the chances of more background detail in the areas of ambient light would be greater. With slide film you generally have a latitude of 5 f stops, two above your setting and two below. Anything outside that range will go white or black. I'm not sure what the latitude is with his digital set up.
