Drag does not evident itself due only to how fast you swim. As most any seasoned experienced diver will tell you, swimming through kelp or getting caught swiming against a current will make you wish you were as streamlined as possible.
A slung pony across your left chest would be much less drag compared to one mounted on your tank. It will also be much easier to manipulate if necessary.
