That "softness" is actually things moving from the longer exposure and a decreased depth of field from the wide apature. Also some is the dark areas looking that way when they are brought out in post-processing, do to the limited luminance bits in dark areas.
In taking picures I always underexpose in order to ensure there are no saturated regiins in the picture. Most digital cameras on standard settings will porduce saturated regions in the photo.
