I always carry a spare mask when I solo in saltwater. Although in my original dive class in the 60's we did maskless ascents. Still am comfortable with diving without a mask. Dropped a few in fresh water and found them.
I most often use a fold away snorkel. Someday some seal is going to come up. Grab my snorkel and take it along with my mask. Thus the spare mask ;-)
