I've got a set of home-built spring straps that have 200 dives and ZERO maintenance--I don't even bother to rinse 'em--and the only sign of wear is some oxidization on the aluminum cylinders.
Compared with all the plastic fiddly bits on traditional straps, spring straps will probably outlast your fins.
