I'll probably get eaten alive for mentioning this, but I know a gentleman who occasionally hunts BSB in Mexican waters, where it can be done legally only while freediving.
He says he's seen BSB with large bites taken out of them, and doing quite well apparently. If a spear did not hit vital organs, it's possible a fish could carry it around and lead a life, albeit handicapped.
No BSB were advocated to be shot in this post, and no fish were harmed.
