Kelp Restoration Project Assistant
Expected Start Date: Immediately
The Santa Monica Baykeeper is looking for a marine biologist, marine ecologist or similarly trained and experienced individual to join the Kelp Restoration Project Team. The Kelp Restoration Project has been actively studying and restoring the historical kelp beds of Santa Monica Bay since 1996. Our volunteer based work off of Malibu and the Palos Verdes Peninsula requires extensive SCUBA diving. This exciting applied ecological work is performed year-round 2 to 3 days per week from our 24 foot boat, which is docked in Marina del Rey. The Santa Monica Baykeeper, established in 1993 is a 501c(3) organization whose mission is to protect and restore the Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay and adjacent waters through enforcement, fieldwork and community action.
Assist the Kelp Project Director with the following responsibilities
SCUBA based subtidal field work including monitoring and restoration of nearshore kelp beds
Data collection and analysis
Volunteer diver recruitment, training and management
Grant management
Reporting to granting and permitting agencies
Boat maintenance
SCUBA and field gear maintenance
Outreach activities related to the Kelp Restoration Project and Santa Monica Baykeeper
Required skills:
Excellent SCUBA skills, preferably certified and current scientific diver with the American Academy of Underwater Scientists, with experience in cold water and limited visibility
(Rescue Diver Certification Minimum)
Experience with data base management and statistical analysis, (JMP, ACCESS, EXCEL)
Familiarity with California nearshore marine species
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Piloting of small boats
Physically capable of working the deck, and operations of a boat at sea
