Lifeguards say a man has been arrested accused of using a spear gun to kill a protected sea bass.
Lifeguards say they spotted a boat in the La Jolla Ecological Preserve Sunday afternoon.
And when they looked through high-powered binoculars they saw three men pulling a black sea bass out of the water.
The alleged poachers were then brought in by authorities.
"Anytime you go fishing in California it's your responsibility to number one have a license, number two know exactly where you're at, and number three know the kinds of animals that are illegal to take," said Lt. Rick Wurts with San Diego Lifeguards.
San Diego police arrested the man on suspicion of shooting an endangered species and fishing in a protected area.
