Any of the braided lines are very thin and strong compared to mono. Spiderline will cut your hands if you try to break it. Scizzors work good on it.
Spectra braided line is popular among many ocean fishermen for larger game. They use it for backing with a topshot of mono. So they can carry more line on the same capacity reel.
Many fishing(cattle) boats do not like braided lines:-) Because it will cut through mono. If two lines are dragged across each other. I personally do not use braided line nor stainless steel hooks and I am trying to get away from using lead. I personally believe fishing tackle should be bio-degradable.
Another new type of line is fluorocarbon similiar to mono. Except that it is supposed to be almost invisiable underwater. Used mostly for leaders, it is now coming out for regular line use.
Every special interest group that I know of, has a dark side. With fishing, it is littering above and below the surface.
