Man shot by police officer after alleged attack outside Long Beach aquarium

(Long Beach) - A Long Beach police officer killed a transient who allegedly tried to attack him with a chain outside the Aquarium of the Pacific Saturday, a sergeant said.

At about 4 p.m., the officer noticed the man rummaging through a garbage can near the entrance to the aquarium, said the Long Beach Police Department.

After ignoring the officer's requests to stop, the transient took a chain with a large padlock from his bicycle and allegedly ran toward the officer swinging the chain, police said.

The officer drew his baton and ordered the man to stop, police said.

When the man continued to advance with the chain, the officer shot the man numerous times in the upper body, police said.

The man was declared dead at a nearby hospital. No one else was injured.

The aquarium remained open during the investigation, but some nearby streets were blocked for a time, police said.

It was the first shooting ever at Aquarium of the Pacific, authorities said.
