Wednesday, May 11, 2005, 7 pm at the Ports O'Call Restaurant in Ports O'Call Village, San Pedro there will be a presentation on how to sink US Navy surplus ships as artificial reefs. The meeting will feature the same presentation that San Diego Oceans Foundation (SDOF) gave in March down in San Diego. After the presentation, there will be a meeting to form a Los Angeles area "SinkGroup."
Essentially, SDOF (the guys that sank the Yukon) are spearheading an effort to sink ships in California and along the west coast. They will provide guidance and advice, but the majority of the effort will have to be accomplished by individual SinkGroups for each community that wants to sink a ship.
A little more information is available at www.ships2reefs.com but if you want to find out what is going on, you should plan on attending this meeting. Keep in mind that this isn't something that can be acomplished in a day or a week. This will be a long term commitment by a dedicated group of volunteers, and skills of all sorts (including legal advice and fund raising skills) will be needed.
That's pretty much all the details that I have at this point. Come to the meeting if you want to get involved or learn more.
