If your buddy said he had 300PSI, then it sounds like it was not a true out of air, his reg was breathing heavier than normal. If he has hundreds of dives, I would have to assume he knows what his reg feels like at 300PSI, this sounds more like an equipment failure to me.

Even if I had 2000 PSI, and my reg started breathing very heavy, I would buddy breathe also, and then get my reg and pressure gauge checked.
