Just a thought... Why were you on a night dive with an unfamiliar buddy for your first night dive? You have to ask why would this person dive with you if you had not been trained in a night dive with an instructor? I am fairly new to diving and none of my experienced diver friends would let me night dive with them until I had rec'd my AOW certification.
