ENCINITAS ---- A 44-year-old woman weighed down with a scuba dive belt nearly drowned in the surf Sunday at an Encinitas beach, a fire captain said.

It happened about 11 a.m. at Seaside Beach, between the Cardiff area of Encinitas and Solana Beach, Encinitas fire Capt. Jon Peterson said.

The woman had entered the water with five other scuba divers, one of them a dive master, but went under and could not regain her balance, Peterson said.

The weights on her belt were improperly balanced and she kept rolling around in the surf, unable to catch her breath, the captain said.

Firefighters advised the woman to go to hospital but she refused, Peterson said.
