A scuba diver who died Sunday just off the coast of Pacific Grove has been identified as 48-year-old Elk Grove resident Tyler Dutton, a Monterey County coroner's spokesman said today.

Dutton and three friends were scuba diving off a private boat around 10 a.m.

After a 32-minute dive at a 53-foot depth, the four men began ascending from the water.

However at about 15 feet, Dutton quickly ascended ahead of the other divers, according to the spokesman.

When the other divers reached the surface they reportedly noticed Dutton thrashing about in the water before going unconscious. He sank approximately 1 foot underwater without his breathing regulator in his mouth.

The spokesman said Dutton was pulled onto the boat where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

He was transported to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula were he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death is pending a full autopsy.
