I do not know if this fish was released or if it broke free. Many anglers will cut the line. If the hook cannot be easily removed from the fish without further damage. It appears that this hook is not stainless steel. So it will detoriate and fall free after a certain amount of time. The fish will survive and be more educated about fish hooks and line. I usually only fish for what I eat. If there is a chance I will be releasing fish. I crimp the barb. So it is easy to remove. Nearly all my fly fishing hooks are barbless. Because I don't like to eat trout.
