I thought the attack took place at the surface.
It was in December of 1994, off Pt. Bennett. The account I heard said the urchin diver, Jimmy Robinson, was handing his gear up to the boat when the attack occured. Crewmen on the deck heard Robinson scream as the shark grabbed him. They managed pull him aboard but he died a few hours later---his right leg was nearly bitten off by the shark and he bled to death.
In our water, the GWS typically feeds on the surface, coming up from below, inflicting a bite, and then waiting for the seal to bleed to death before consuming it.
