"theirs not mush left"

have to disagree with you here, the viz has been horrible, there is plenty of mush. :))

Seriously though, the white sea bass has made a huge comeback in recent years due to the changes in commercial fishing laws some time ago. I've also seen local photos, and have heard of a lot more sightings of Black Sea Bass as well.

On most days of freedive spearfishing, I usually end up in the water for hours without a fish. Parltly because I go after the bigger species, but mainly because I suck. From what I have taken, most spearfisherman are in the same boat (not the sucking part) as I.

Someone has already mentioned that the spearing of fish (scuba and freedive)constitutes roughly .03% of all the fish taken in California. I would recommend that you use your time going after the other 99% of the problem, hell I'll even support you on the commercial stuff!
