I've been running Dive Alerts for years, for at
least 700 dives on one (on my open circuit rig)
and about 300 on the other (on my rebreather). I
check them periodicaly. On a recent check the 700
dive unit wasn't very loud, so I replaced it.

For Cocos, you want, at least:

Sausage
Dive Alert
Backup dive light for emergencies only
Maybe flares if I could figure out how to
get them down there post 9/11. Two Sky Blazer boat flares
fit nicely in a 6 C-cell UK divelight case.
Maybe a mirror.

I have a friend who was at Cocos and had two
guys off the boat go missing. They found one
tank (empty AL80) and a sausage 18 miles offshore.
Never found the guys or any other gear.
