I believe the term "stroke" was coined by Irving, refering to divers who tried to curry favor with him by "stroking" him. Despite his arrogant, scornfull, better-than-thou attitude, he did co-perfect the DIR team diving concept which results in the safest of diving procedures. If safety was the only concern/objective/motive for scuba diving, then we should all be diving DIR. But since there are other important factors involved in diving, best advice is be true into thyself. Live and let live, dive and let dive.
