Simple way to avoid losing mask: hood first, then mask, then hood over mask strap. That way you can be a Lloyd Bridges SEA HUNT dude and push the mask up on your forehead and not have to remove the reg from your mouth, pull the mask down on your neck, and stick the reg back in your mouth.
