If you must use a pony, sling it as a stage bottle. It's out of the way, you can hand it off to an OOA diver (can't do that with a mounted pony)and the reg is stowed until you need it. Crack open the valve before entering the water just to charge the hose and check presure, then close the valve. It can't leak or freeflow and if you ever need it, you will have access to all of it. Having a pony hard-mounted to your primary tank(s) is a great way to catch the kelp while you swim through it. Unless you have an attentive buddy with you, it's difficult to reach. Mounting it upside down creates even more problems, such as banging your first stage each time you sit, remove gear or back out of a hole, wreck or into an object you don't see behind you.
