The two most respected technical diving instructors in California are Peter Den Haan of the Progressive Diving Institute and T. Wings Stocks of Adventure, Depth & Technology.
Although the Cult of DIR has a core of very vocal zealots, it seems to be more about “We’re better than everyone else, and everyone who disagrees with us is a heretic (stroke).” GUE began as a marketing scheme for Halcyon who still uses “DIR” on their products. I have yet to come across any GUE instructor without the attitude problem. That is why many of the best instructors that were once associated with GUE have absolved themselves of all ties to it, and their role of instructors has been shrinking.
