I'd go for the pantone because Gretag Macbeth is very proprietary and the profiles it creates can only be utilized by their own very expensive profiling software. This won't matter if you just want to profile your monitor but will matter if you later decide to profile you printer and scanner. Most output device profiling software starts around $1200. Gretag Macbeth's is around $1800-2400
I think Pantone's spyder generates ICC compatible profiles so you they can be read by most output device profiling software.
What kind of minitor do you have? You'll really want something in the Sonny Triniton quality range to get the most from all this.
