How small is the sea to you?

I have been curious after looking at pretty much every diver photo album in Southern California, how familiar you are with the underwater areas. When you go diving, do you pretty much know the terrain and where everythingn is, and where you will see one fish, or is it like you have no idea if there is going to bea cool cave somewhere or something like that?
