Mask Leaks & Facial Hair...Any Suggestions

Hey Everybody,

I have a friend with a goatee and his mask is always half full of water. I took him to the dive shop to get a different mask, but none fit very well. I see old, salty successful divers with beards all the time. So... I'm confused. Does facial hair make masks leak? If so, what's the key to stopping the leakage (besides shaving). What keeps the water out of those bearded salty dogs' masks?
