Damian, I'm not suggesting that you should go out and buy a lot of gadgets, but DO get gear you are sure of and that will make you comfy and confident. The BC is nine years old already! YOU already have DOUBTS about it! This is life support equipment, btw.
If you're not sure about spending the money then you could always rent.
Buying top tier skis and boots sure improved my skiing.
