I think what he meant was that he was using long hoses, and weighting and submerging underwater, using the hoses as his air source to the surface. There is a name for this...but it escapes me at present.

IMO, this is far my dangerous than scuba. You don't have to be trained, your completely dependent on a hose that could get cut by a boat, swept away in the current, etc. And if you're deep enough and don't understand the concept of decompression, you can get bent.
