I have experienced all sorts of rigs and have now settled on the Halcyon backplate and wings. Simply put, it is the most streamlinned rig around. It has been tested under the most ruthless dive conditions, it had met the challenge and it works. I'm not sure what shop you said were reluctant to sell it to you, but to my knowledge there are only three authorized Halcyon dealers in the SoCal area: Reef Seekers, Scuba Toys and I now understand ( Since DEMA ) Diver's Discount Supply.
In addition to the above, as far as drysuits go, I have been using the crushed neoprene drysuit for years and I have had none of the problems you described. I have the latex seals and they are fine.
