I just responded to the same question on Rondale's new diver forum (www.newdiver.com). Check out the posts there but here are my thoughts.
I just got certed in June in a 2 piecer. I hated the 2-pc rentals - they never fit. I am portly (hence the name) and thought I would be okay in a one piece that fit right. Almost went custom but found an off-the-rack with integrated hood with a great fit. I like my suit quite a bit. I do tend to "run-warm" so this can be very subjective. If you get chilled easily this is probably not the right answer.
It also help me shave a few pounds from the weight belt, another BIG plus for me.
