N2 causes the red blood cells to get rigid and as a result over extended period and longer exposure times the cappilaries will get damaged.

For this reason alone, many of us have switched to Heliox when decompressing.. By eliminating the N2 and carefully balancing the 02 *spikes* we can minimize hang times and cause less damage to the red blood cells.
