I just finished reading the book "The Terrible Hours" which is the history of the first submarine rescue and the navy's early work to develop diving in the '30s and '40s. I recommend it highly.

In the dives at 250fsw on air (they were almost ready to use helium mixes) the narcing problems faced by the extremely experienced divers were amazing. More than half the time they needed to be yanked back up because they were acting dangerous or passing out. If this book doesn't put the fear of depth on air, nothing will!
