Who are you doing your training with up there?? I used Wings Stocks out of Santa Cruz and did most of our dives in Monterey.. Wings was great.
Hopefully the advantages of trimix will become clear in your trimix class. To me it's sort of one of those things that you get by OK without it until you discover it and then wonder why it took so longer to discover.
I used to routinely dive to 200' on air, now you would never catch me going deeper than 100' on air.
The DIR way of configuration is about balancing the rig. You are correct in that the 2 stages on one side is counter balanced with the light cannister.
