Dale -

the primary goes on a long hose - 5-7' long. The
cavers need the full 7, rec divers might be fine
with the 5. Bigger guys like me need a little more.
My 5.5' hose is a couple inches shorter than I'd like.

This allows the two of you to actually swim while
sharing air, and ensures that the OOA victim gets
a reg known to be working, whether or not they ask
you for it first. The common 39" octo hose is too
short to allow them to do anything but be a barnacle
on you, esp since most people have it oriented for
their use, not a buddy facing them.

The octo is on a very short hose attached to your
neck. You never have to worry about reaching for it
or that it fell off the scumbag, or that it's dragging
along the reef getting jammed.
