I've gotten to the point where vis isn't really a big issue. I dive most weekends in Monterey whatever the conditions. If the vis sucks I look at nudibranchs. If it's great I go for wide angle shots. For me the only reason to pay attention to the conditions is to make sure it's safe. If it's safe to dive I get wet. Heck - sometimes it's the days with weird conditions when you see the most interesting things. I did a dive a couple days after a huge storm in Monterey this winter. Conditions weren't great but I saw a Gunnel (actually two of them) which I haven't seen before or since and isn't in any of the ID books. It vaguely resembles a not-described-by-science-yet critter mentioned in the Petersen book but wasn't quite a match. I though this was pretty cool. Had I waited for "good" diving conditions I might never have seen it.
