Monterey is one of those places where "best" conditions are pretty rare and even harder to predict in advance. I find that having a good time diving in Monterey is largely about being committed to having a good time regardless of the conditions. Surge, cold and limited vis are the order of the day in Central California but for me the incredible marine life is worth the hassel.

On Sat for instance I had a really good time and among other things saw a Nudibranch I'd never seen before (Acanthodoris hudsoni). The boat ride back from Carmel to Monterey was a bit rough and several people did get sick but the diving was actually quite nice. The fact that the waves were of the wind chop variety rather than a swell made for light surge and 25 foot vis is pretty good by local standards. As always YMMV.
