jason, i don't intend to enter in the middle of this
(apparently) controversial discussion, but i just
wanted to mention that when i and a few other
socal divers were up in monterey aug of 1999, we
were extremely surprised to see that monestary
beach was dead flat(!!). we were there to dive
pt lobos, but a few of us were seriously considering
diving monastery beach as well since we had
read/heard a ton about how dangerous it is and
how few and far between the dives can be there.
unfortunately, one of the locals in our group
resisted firmly, so, we never got our 'once in a
lifetime' dive at monastery when the waters were
flat flat flat. but we shall return!!

i guess the conditions there must be quite variable--
but, then again, so are the beach conditions off, say,
laguna beach...
