I actually checked out Pirate's Cove - between Shell beach and Avila - a couple of weeks ago when we were on a camping trip. I'm afraid the vis was lousy do to the plankton bloom, but otherwise it would have made a nice dive. It's a nice, protected spot with lots of wildlife (saw some harbor seals and a sea otter), kelp and fish. Although it can be done as a shore dive, I would recommend renting a kayak and taking it over to the cove to avoid hauling your gear over a long, steep trail.

The best part though is when you're done. Head over to Sycamore Hot Springs and rent one of their redwood tubs for an hour. Paradise!
